Convo with Jessia

Canadian pop sensation JESSIA is back with a soul-stirring new single, “Care About Me,” released recently across all streaming platforms. Known for her raw talent, captivating melodies, and poignant lyricism, JESSIA has once again delivered a heartfelt ballad that speaks directly to the soul.

In a recent interview, JESSIA shared insights into the inspiration behind “Care About Me” and her journey as an artist. The song, she explains, delves into the painful experience of watching a relationship deteriorate while still being in it. With her signature emotive vocals and poignant lyrics, JESSIA captures the essence of longing for more in a fading connection.

What sets “Care About Me” apart is its ability to resonate deeply with listeners. JESSIA recounts the overwhelming response she received when teasing the song on socials platforms . Fans poured in with their own stories of feeling unseen or alone in relationships, turning “Care About Me” into another “safe space” anthem for her community. Despite the bittersweet nature of these shared experiences, JESSIA finds solace in the ability of music to provide comfort and solidarity during tough times.

This isn’t JESSIA’s first rodeo in the music industry. With her debut single “I’m not Pretty” going viral and earning her a JUNO Award, she has solidified her position as a powerhouse in the pop scene. However, navigating the pressure and expectations that come with such success hasn’t been easy. JESSIA emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself and embracing authenticity, a lesson she learned firsthand while transitioning to releasing music independently.

Reflecting on her experiences touring with OneRepublic in Asia and supporting Dean Lewis on a sold-out Canadian tour in 2023, JESSIA highlights the profound impact of connecting with fans face-to-face. Their stories and struggles serve as inspiration for her songwriting, reminding her of the profound role music plays in people’s lives.

As JESSIA’s legacy continues to grow, she hopes her music will serve as a beacon of strength and resilience for her listeners. Through her honest storytelling and heartfelt melodies, she seeks to inspire others to face their demons head-on and find solace in the shared human experience.

In a world often fraught with uncertainty, JESSIA’s music stands as a reminder that, even in our darkest moments, we are never truly alone. “Care About Me” is not just a song but a testament to the power of music to heal, uplift, and unite us all.

Congratulations on the release of your new single, “Care About Me”! Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this song and what it means to you personally?

Thank you! “Care About Me” is about watching your relationship fade away while you’re still in it, and realizing that you deserve so much more.

Your music often resonates deeply with listeners due to its emotional depth. What was the songwriting process like for “Care About Me,” and how do you approach translating your personal experiences into your music?

It is one of those songs that just poured out of me in 20 minutes. It felt like a weight was lifted after I finished writing it. I knew instantly that it was a special song.

You mentioned that you were initially unsure if people would relate to “Care About Me.” How does it feel to see such an overwhelming response from your fans, particularly on socials platforms, where they’ve shared their own stories?

It’s bittersweet because I wish people didn’t have to relate to these lyrics as they’re so painful. But, it’s also really beautiful that we are all able to share these experiences and help each other through similar things. I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of stories and comments people have shared!

“Care About Me” has been described as another “safe space” anthem for your community. What does it mean to you to create music that not only entertains but also provides comfort and solidarity to your listeners?

I always turn to music when my life gets hard and I lean on artists to be able to articulate my feelings when I can’t. I feel like I am just paying it forward and helping people feel a little less lonely through the hard times.

Your debut single, “I’m not Pretty,” went viral and garnered widespread attention. How do you navigate the pressure and expectations that come with following up such a successful release?

I feel like pressure kills creativity and I am trying my best to stay creative and write what I think is good. There have been times that I have caught myself writing what I thought people wanted and those releases have inadvertently been less successful. I have learned that authenticity always wins. I am constantly trying to center myself and write what I would want to hear.

Transitioning to releasing music independently is a significant step in any artist’s career. What motivated you to make this transition, and how has it impacted your creative process and overall journey in the music industry?

It was hard saying goodbye but I am so much happier now. I wouldn’t change a thing now. I love that I own my masters and that I am able to release any song I want when I want. It’s very empowering!

Can you share some insights into your experiences touring Asia with OneRepublic and supporting Dean Lewis on a sold-out Canadian tour in 2023? How have these experiences influenced you as an artist?

My favorite part is going out and meeting the fans after the shows and seeing who I am actually singing to. It is really inspiring hearing everyone’s stories and what they have gone through or are going through. It really impacts me as a songwriter.

As a JUNO Award-winning artist with millions of streams globally, what advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are looking to make their mark in the industry?

I would say we all are working out the kinks constantly. Don’t wait for everything to be figured out. Just start posting and putting yourself out there. There is so much room in this industry for you. I feel like people get discouraged if they aren’t at the top of the top, but there are so many layers in music and you just need to find your place and your people. The only way to do that is to put yourself out there to be discovered.

Looking ahead, what can fans expect from you in terms of future releases or projects? Are there any collaborations or exciting ventures on the horizon that you can tease?

I am releasing my first independent EP this spring and I couldn’t be more excited! Equal parts excited and terrified!

Finally, with your ever-growing fanbase and continued success, what do you hope your legacy as an artist will be, and what message do you want to leave with your listeners through your music?

Oh, good question! I hope my music just helps people. I hope it helps them crack open a little bit and face the tough stuff. It’s so easy to push everything down, but the true strength is working through the hard things. I hope I am able to make everyone feel a little more seen and a little less alone in life.

And that’s all for now; see you next time.
