There are many forms of ballet, and it is often seen through fancy booklets and through the luxury architecture found in theaters. However, Izza is showing those parts of ballet that are usually hidden from view: the pain in dancing, the envy disguised as friendship, and the brutality behind the expectation of how to gracefully cope with one’s own disappearance.
Launched on July 17th, A Night at the Ballet: Act I shows us that a professional trained at the prestigious Central Saint Martins college has the talent to create emotional pieces based on fashion, The ballet “Swan Lake” is very much like the performance in that it reveals a concept in a dreamy manner, while “Criminal Behavior” goes another path, being both dramatic and honest.
For Izza, the act of writing songs feels like working in a gym, while recording tracks at a studio resembles a workout session. Each song tells a story, yet forms part of a bigger narrative covering depth of emotions, including sorrow and anger, which is leading to the rebirth of self-esteem, until the last song of the EP symbolically finishes the story in “Another Lesson.”
Co-produced with Noah Barer, mixed by Serge Courtois, and mastered by John Greenham, the EP also comes with a companion short film for the intended future release of Act II, as a sequel celebrating life after mourning.
However, Izza wants you to look at the tragedy first. The general line between reality and fantasy is blurred. The character in the issue is providing one voice, unlike in most pop confessions processed with the help of music. Pretty happy and sad at the same time.
